Tulips & Maple: A Story of Sweet Success
Like a fine wine pairing, our name blends the origins of our Dutch and Canadian founders. It all began when Canadian Kristine Norenius met Dutchman Mark van der Pas at graduate school in Brussels. It was a match made in heaven. She was impressed with his culinary expertise and European passion for life, and he fell in love with her drive to build a disciplined world-class firm that would make a difference, blossom and inspire.
Mark, a graduate of Holland's leading Hotel & Restaurant Management University the respected Hogere Hotelschool in Maastricht, soon won Kristine's heart with his European charm and undeniable culinary skills. In 1991, with a dream to bring Europe's culinary flair to Canadian parties and events, the two hard-working "MBAs" gave up their European digs to move to Ottawa and launch Tulips & Maple, Inc.
Nearly 20 years and a growing business of 30 staff later, Tulips & Maple has stretched well beyond its humble beginnings in a 600-square foot space. Today, housed in a dedicated, event-ready 8,000 square-foot facility, Tulips & Maple continues to be instrumental to Canada's best events by building on that perfect and spicy blend of passion and precision.
Recognition: An Added Delight
Barely newlyweds, this husband and wife team set out to build the best catering company in Canada. Tulips & Maple's exceedingly high standards, attention to detail and exceptional culinary skills soon became recognized, first by customers, then by the media and ultimately by the industry. The hard work has earned some just desserts.
Mark has been honoured with many culinary awards and has been featured in numerous media publications and productions. Mark is recognized as:
- A Member of the prestigious Toques Blanches organization.
- 2003 Ottawa Chef of the Year.
- 2001 Recipient of Ottawa's Top 40 Under 40 Award.
Kristine has been the navigator behind the scenes. Her expertise and experience has been shared through many speaking engagements, media interviews and consulting contracts. Kristine has been honoured as the:
- 2000 Ottawa Businesswoman Achievement Award.
- 2000 Nepean Businesswoman of the Year Award.
